Avoiding people. I avoid people that I actually like. I suppose that’s a phobia, but it’s also a habit.
— Morrissey, 1984 (when asked what his worst habit was)

Today is suicide-awareness day. I don’t care if you think suicide is “selfish”, if you think somebody who attempts suicide is a “pussy” or anything like that. Because lets face it, suicide is real. We can’t ignore what is blantly an issue in todays society. Multiple of my friends have attempted it, and that has especially impacted me this past year. It breaks my heart when I see people mock the result of a mental illness. Suicide is not a joke. It is a major problem worldwide. Within the past few years, suicide rates have drastically increased. An estimated 1 in 5 high school students have said that he/she has considered suicide in the past year. Every 40 seconds, somebody attempts suicide. Every 13 minutes, somebody dies from suicide. This is to be taken seriously. Society will tell you that you aren’t good enough, that you don’t fit in, that nothing you do is right. But none of that is true. You don’t need to be any certain way. I also want to give a reminder that: everybody is going through their own battle. You may have no idea, but that doesn’t make it ok to treat others poorly. Be mindful of your actions, words DO hurt. If you know anybody who isn’t doing so well, please talk to them. You have no idea how much it would mean to them. And for everybody out there who is filled with self-loathe and overwhelming emotions, never forget that no matter what: YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Life is hard, people can be mean, parents can be cruel, friends are often fake, school is a pain, although thats just reality. There is no use in denying the truth. When the world wants to take your happiness, don’t let it. You need to remind yourself that it will get better, and that you will be ok. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, maybe not for a while. But thats ok. Someday it will be ok. In the meantime, keep your head up. Take a deep breath and tell yourself that you are worth it. That you matter. You are important and you DO have a purpose.
Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
To everyone who is struggling, hang in there, the sadness won’t last forever.
